Christmas may not be technically the season for Rain and Moonwater, but it definitely is the season for shopping locally! (I mean, let’s be real—it’s an all-year-round thing, but this time of year, it’s especially important!)
Ottawa is full of amazing shops that showcase Canadian and local artists all year long, and I’m all about supporting them. There’s something so special about picking up gifts from these stores—it’s like getting the best of both worlds: supporting a local business in my neighborhood and giving a nod to a talented small artist or maker. One of my absolute faves? Makerhouse! They always have the most unique gifts, with something for everyone on your list. Whether it's homeware, kitchenware, candles, soaps, fun food gifts—you name it, they’ve got it! Pretty sure my family is now expecting a Makerhouse gift every Christmas. 😜
I have a few other go-to spots (listed below) that are always at the top of my list when gift-giving season rolls around. If you’re in the Ottawa area, make sure you carve out some time to check them out. Trust me, you'll find that perfect, one-of-a-kind gift or stocking stuffer that’ll leave a lasting impression!
JV Studios - Another local fave of mine!
Makerhouse - A must visit!
Hokum - Brand new store located in the Glebe with the coolest vibes!
One of the best perks of living in Ottawa? All the amazing holiday artisan markets that pop up around the city! It’s such a fun way to discover new local makers or shop your faves directly. Plus, it’s always a blast getting to chat with the creators and learn about their process and what inspires them in their craft. The Christmas markets are already in full swing, but there are still plenty more coming up as we head into December! Whether you're looking for a fun date night, a hangout with your besties, or a family-friendly outing, you have to check out at least one of these markets!
Greely Good Market - Holiday Markets on Sundays and a Night Market Happening November 28th!
613Flea - The Holiday Night Market would be a perfect date night!
Cheerfully Made Christmas Market - Happening November 30th in Almonte!

I’ve already started my holiday shopping, and I wanted to give a shoutout to some of the incredible makers I’m supporting this season (no spoilers, family and friends!!).

Here’s a little reminder: shopping from a local or small business makes a huge impact—way more than ordering from Daddy Bezos or those big box stores. When you shop small, your dollars are supporting a dream, a family, and chances are, that money is going right back into the local community. It’s like giving a gift within your gift—those makers who pour their heart and soul into their craft really do feel the love! So, happy shopping, and let’s make this holiday season even more meaningful!
